SWINDON - Eight UK projects to make the textile industry more sustainable have been awarded a share of a Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) £5.3 million research fund.

They include Professor Nigel Minton, of the University of Nottingham, who is working on ways to replace the polluting synthetic blue dye used in denim production.

His team are pioneering a return to natural, plant-based processes and will use genome engineering tools to optimise the performance of the bacterium required in the fermentation of the dye.
