LENZING/VAXJO – Austrian cellulosic fibre specialist Lenzing and Swedish wood pulp supplier Södra have been awarded a €10 million (US$10.9m) grant from the European Union (EU) to develop the recycling of textile waste on an industrial scale.

The grant has been awarded as part of the EU's LIFE funding programme for the environment and climate action, under the banner of 'LIFE TREATS' (Textile Recycling in Europe at Scale) which aims to reach an annual processing capacity of 50,000 tonnes of textile waste by 2027.

Lenzing and Södra have worked closely together for many years and signed an agreement in 2021 to scale-up the production of Södra's OnceMore pulp from textile waste to make Tencel Refibra lyocell fibres.
