DHAKA - Garment manufacturers and trade unionists in Bangladesh have issued a joint statement condemning the murder of a garment workers' leader who was beaten to death after leaving a meeting with factory management over a pay dispute.

Shahidul Islam Shahid, 45, an organiser of the Bangladesh Garment and Industrial Workers Federation (BGIWF), was killed last month after leaving the meeting at a Prince Jacquard Sweaters Ltd factory in the garment hub city of Gazipur.

The statement was issued following a meeting of leaders of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and IndustriALL Bangladesh Council (IBC) in Dhaka.
