GAZIPUR - Workers' rights campaigners have condemned the murder of a garment workers' trade union leader who was beaten to death after leaving a meeting with factory management over a pay dispute.

Shahidul Islam Shahid, 45, an organiser of the Bangladesh Garment and Industrial Workers Federation (BGIWF), was killed after leaving the meeting at a Prince Jacquard Sweaters Ltd factory in the garment hub city of Gazipur.

He had reportedly been trying to resolve a dispute over unpaid bonuses and wages at the factory which supplies brands including T.K. Maxx and Tessival, according to the Clean Clothes Campaign (CCC).
