Resale as a service is fast becoming a core part of mainstream fashion retail, according to a new episode of Ecotextile Talks featuring ThredUp chief strategy officer Alon Rotem.
In this new episode, Rotem explains how ThredUp’s white‑label “branded resale shops” and multi-brand “clean out kit” programmes are giving brands plug-and-play access to secondhand markets while feeding inventory into ThredUp’s own marketplace.
Speaking to our host Philip Berman, Rotem is candid about the consumer value proposition: convenience over maximum payout. This convenience sits alongside a strong sustainability narrative; ThredUp’s network of “aftermarket” partners and internal initiatives such as rescue boxes aim to keep garments in circulation or in use, with partners reporting that less than 5% of material they receive ultimately lacks a second-life application.
“ThreadUp’s core business achievement was really bringing convenience to resell,” Rotem says, a theme that runs throughout the episode as resale moves from niche to normal.
