Although cautious about electrification of textile dyeing and finishing, Phil Patterson believes the industry is on the cusp of a heat pump tipping point

The amount of emissions per useful kWh of heat or electricity depends on the fuel used in the boilers or generators

For the past couple of years there have been increasing calls for electrification to be rolled out across the textile, and specifically wet processing, industry – the logic being that, ultimately, renewable resources such as wind, solar and nuclear will provide electricity that is almost free from carbon emissions.

This sounds like a ‘silver bullet’ but there are many challenges and complexities, not least because there are vast amounts of perfectly serviceable production machinery installed, fed by perfectly serviceable utilities, that are churning out vast amounts of products with measly profit margins.
