NEW YORK - Online retail giant Amazon has been accused of allowing clothing manufactured in Bangladeshi factories that violate international safety standards to be sold on its website.

An investigation by the Wall Street Journal found that "a steady stream" of clothing from banned factories in Bangladesh was being sold through Amazon Marketplace by wholesalers and third party sellers.

The Journal said goods on sale via Amazon Marketplace were made at factories which had been blacklisted by other brands and retailers because of their safety standards. However, it acknowledged it had not been able to trace any products sold by Amazon-owned brands back to banned factories.
