LONDON – Luxury fashion platform Farfetch has published a report outlining the correlation between buying pre-owned apparel and the subsequent need not to buy a brand-new product, to assess the environmental savings second-hand fashion could unlock.

Undertaken with support from the London Waste and Recycling Board (LWARB), QSA and ICARO, Farfetch surveyed 3,000 consumers, split evenly across the UK, USA and China, each with a history of purchasing pre-owned garments to first gauge the thinking behind these buys.

From here, by harnessing industry data of the resources used to manufacture new apparel items, the companies have been able to establish the ‘displacement rate’ – a figure determined by the desire to buy new stock having already bought a pre-owned alternative – of each purchase and the theoretical resource savings these yield.
