VALLETTA – Authorities in Malta have unveiled ambitious new plans to galvanise the country’s waste management infrastructure by reducing landfilled waste, scaling recycling technologies and promoting the principles of a circular economy.

Hailed as a ‘quantum leap’ in waste management by the government, the plan centres on 10 action areas which include providing fiscal incentives to encourage product repair and reuse, and exploring the potential for extended producer responsibility (EPR) in industries like textiles and oils.

Some €500 million will be invested in this initiative to address Malta’s waste management woes. For now, a four-week consultation period has gotten underway, enabling industry stakeholders to have their say on proceedings.
