YANGON - A coalition of trade bodies and multi-stakeholder initiatives has released a joint statement calling for international action to protect Myanmar’s half a million garment workers.

Garment workers have been at the heart of pro-democracy protests against the military coup in Myanmar where Ma Moe Sandar Myint, chairwoman of the Federation of General Workers Myanmar, has gone into hiding to avoid arrest.

The statement expresses "profound concern" about the growing violence being used by the military in support of the coup and calls for an immediate return to the democratically-elected government.
