DHAKA - Bangladeshi workers' rights activist and former child garment worker Kalpona Akter has joined The Circle, the global NGO founded by singer Annie Lennox, as an ambassador.

Akter will add her voice to The Circle's call for legislation to ensure that a living wage is paid to the millions of garment workers, 80 per cent of whom are women, in global supply chains.

The founder and executive director of the Bangladesh Centre for Worker Solidarity (BCWS), who began her working life as a garment worker in Dhaka at the age of 12, has worked with The Circle informally for several years.
