BOSTON – Footwear giant New Balance has found itself in a legal spat that alleges the brand has “mislead consumers by making unqualified claims that certain of its sneakers are ‘Made in the USA’” when a “substantial portion” are imported.

US non-profit Truth in Advertising (TINA) filed the complaint with the Federal Trade Commission, insisting “for far too long New Balance has brazenly violated Made in USA origin laws”.

A New Balance spokesperson told Ecotextile News:New Balance seeks to be transparent in all consumer communications, prominently disclosing that where domestic content is at least 70 per cent, the brand’s footwear is labelled Made in the USA.”
