KARACHI: German discount clothing chain Kik has created its own version of the International Accord for Safety and Health in the Textile and Garment Industry to protect garment workers in Pakistan.

The International Accord makes its 187 signatory brands legally liable for the safety of the workers who make their clothes. So far it remains focused on Bangladesh but aims to expand to other countries, starting with Pakistan.

However, Kik, which paid more than US$6 million in compensation after more than 250 people were killed in a 2012 factory fire at one of its suppliers, Ali Enterprises in Karachi, has now entered into its own agreement in the country.
