UNION – Biotechnology company MycoWorks has announced that it is set to open the world's first commercial scale fine mycelium plant next month to provide the fashion industry with its leather alternative Reishi material.

The 136,000 sq ft facility will produce millions of square feet of Reishi - which claims to offer the strength, durability and feel of animal leather with lower environmental impact - per year.

“This is the moment the luxury industry has been waiting for - a plastic-free leather alternative that offers undeniable beauty and performance at scale,” said Patrick Thomas, former CEO of Hermès and MycoWorks board member.
