Local production doesn’t guarantee lower emissions – study

EU-backed research at Maastricht University suggests bringing apparel manufacturing closer to home may not always deliver climate benefits

MAASTRICHT – Simply bringing the manufacturing of apparel closer to where it is sold and distributed does not guarantee a smaller environmental footprint, according to a new study carried out at Maastricht University.

The research found that unless manufacturing sites use clean energy sources and waste is managed carefully, a product’s impact on the environment may not automatically be reduced if it is in a certain location.
