ALEXANDRIA - China’s economic objectives in the Xinjiang region, which produces a fifth of the world's cotton, are underpinned by a state-orchestrated web of detention, surveillance and coerced labour, according to a new study.
Analysis by the Human Rights Research Center (HRRC) claims that hundreds of thousands of Uyghur Muslims in the region are being transferred into factory work programmes that pose enduring, systemic risk for brands sourcing cotton, yarn and finished apparel.
