Germany’s Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Polymer Research IAP will showcase an approach to converting PET-containing textile waste into polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) at next week’s Fakuma 2026, alongside developments in recyclable plastics and bio-based fibres.

The institute said discarded textiles containing polyethylene terephthalate (PET) could provide feedstock for producing PHB. However, it did not disclose conversion yields, feedstock requirements or the process’s development scale.
