SHANXI – Textile industry insiders told delegates at the recent China Textile Conference that they can expect the coal industry to play an increasingly important part in the province’s manufacture of synthetic textile fibres.

It’s reported that Wang Hongjin, chief of the Shanxi Department of Commerce, told attendees: “Our manufacturers are making coal-based synthetic fibres and other materials to supply the booming textile industry in Shanxi and the rest of the country.”

It’s a development that flies in the face of global sustainability initiatives, and will no doubt irk signatories to the UN’s Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action which are working to achieve net-zero emissions in supply chains by 2050.
