DHAKA - Bangladesh's garment industry could face a new threat to its huge export market after a senior European Union official said the country would have to meet EU demands on human rights to continue to enjoy duty-free market access to the bloc.

The country can export to the EU without paying tariffs under the privileges of the 'Everything But Arms' initiative which is intended to boost the economies of the world's least-developed countries (LDC).

However, Rensje Teerink, head of the EU Delegation to Bangladesh, says the EU is looking to increase accountability in terms of the human rights standards it expects in return.
