PHNOM PENH – The Cambodian government has announced financial help for the country’s garment workers who were said to be at risk of running out of money and food during a recent COVID-19 lockdown.

The Ministry of Labour announced a programme worth more than US$11 million for more than 275,000 garment workers from a total of 513 factories in Phnom Penh, Kandal and Preah Sihanouk provinces.

They will each receive a one-off payment of US$40 digitally via their mobile phones through the funding programme which has been cautiously welcomed by trade union leaders and garment workers.
