NEW DELHI - Millions of workers in India, including representatives from the textile and garment sector, carried out a one-day strike last week to highlight the issues of working people ahead of the country’s upcoming general elections this year.
According to the IndustriALL global union, the main demands of trade union organisations behind the strikes include withdrawal of the four labour codes, fixing the monthly minimum wage at US$313, withdrawal of the proposal to privatise public sector enterprises, and the restoration of the old pension scheme for organised and unorganised workforces.
