Challenge the Fabric 2025 (CTF 2025).

The heart of Milan pulsed with innovation and purpose as Challenge the Fabric brought together the fashion industry’s brightest minds to explore a more sustainable future. In a city known for style and sophistication, this event delivered a compelling fusion of dialogue, design, and groundbreaking materials.

The CTF 2025 event brought together around 180 industry stakeholders, including designers, retailers, and textile innovators—all united by a common goal: transforming fashion from the inside out. In a world reckoning with the consequences of fast fashion, CTF has become a vital forum for dialogue, innovation, and progress.

Among the highlights was the much-anticipated MMCF (Man-made Cellulosic Fibres) roundtable, hosted by Textile Exchange. Here, key players—including Sappi Verve—gathered to tackle shared industry challenges, spotlight sustainable innovation, and examine the pivotal role of traceable, wood-based cellulose in reshaping fashion’s trajectory. For Sappi Verve, it was an opportunity to engage in conversations about renewability and the future of responsible fibre sourcing.

Sappi Verve’s mission in action
As a global producer of dissolving wood pulp, Sappi Verve’s sponsorship reflected a deep commitment to driving material innovation and transparency in fashion. Supporting events like Challenge the Fabric allows the brand to directly engage with emerging talent, build partnerships with value-aligned stakeholders, and champion the transformation of the textile supply chain from within. Sponsorship becomes a strategic investment in the future of fashion—one where sustainability, and circularity are no longer optional, but essential.

The event’s creative heartbeat came alive during the Design Award, where design finalists revealed their visionary garments crafted entirely from MMCF materials. The showcase celebrated the intersection of innovation and environmental responsibility, proving that high fashion can—and should—exist harmoniously with sustainability.

Petra Fagerström

The event reached its crescendo with the announcement of the Challenge the Fabric Award, a prestigious recognition of design excellence and forward-thinking materials. This year’s honour went to Swedish designer Petra Fagerström, in collaboration with Sappi Verve. Her winning creation stood out for its authenticity, scalability, and commercial appeal—three pillars that define the future of sustainable fashion.

Crafted from Lyocell made with Verve fibre and blended with organic cotton, Petra’s standout piece was brought to life using the final textile, Ecocell™, supplied by KaraFiber—resulting in a fabric that was both refined and responsible. KaraFiber partnered with Sappi Verve on this initiative, reflecting a shared vision for promoting sustainability and innovation in materials science. Together, they are dedicated to manufacturing premium Lyocell fibres that are natural, fully biodegradable, and derived from renewable wood sources. These fibres provide a unique combination of softness, durability, and moisture management, making them ideal for apparel applications. Petra’s design offered a compelling vision of what’s possible when ethical materials meet artistic innovation.

Bernhard Riegler, VP Marketing of Sappi Dissolving Wood Pulp, praised Petra’s accomplishment:
“We are incredibly proud to see Petra Fagerström bring her vision to life using Verve fibre. Her commitment to sustainability and innovation is exactly what the fashion world needs right now. Designers like Petra give us hope that a circular fashion economy isn’t just a dream—it’s already taking shape.”

Petra’s win is more than a personal triumph—it’s a bold statement about where fashion is headed. As the industry continues to evolve, partnerships like these underscore the importance of traceable sourcing, creative courage, and environmental accountability.

“I enjoyed the challenge of working with Verve fibre,” said Petra, reflecting on her experience. “As a designer, I draw inspiration from the world around me, and exploring how material innovation can solve real-world problems is both creatively and ethically fulfilling.”

For Petra, this award is just the beginning. As she embarks on new projects with sustainability at their core, Sappi continues its mission to empower the next generation of designers committed to building a fashion future that’s not only beautiful but also better for the planet.

As leaders like Sappi Verve and emerging talents like Petra show, change is not only necessary, but entirely possible.
