Futureproofing wool: welfare in Australia, circularity in Europe

Integrity in the global wool supply chain is maturing, as shown by two distinct but parallel developments in Western Australia and Sweden

While one focuses on animal welfare, the other is pioneering a roadmap for circularity in the European market. Both these shifts represent a move toward ‘future-proofing’ natural fibres against regulatory pressure and consumer scrutiny.

In a move welcomed by peak industry bodies, the Western Australian (WA) government has confirmed it will mandate pain relief for mulesing. This legislation brings the state into alignment with Victoria and Tasmania, formalising what is already standard operating procedure for the majority of producers.
