COWES – The Ellen MacArthur Foundation has released Breaking the Plastic Wave: A Comprehensive Assessment of Pathways Towards Stopping Ocean Plastic Pollution, which estimates that the volume of plastics in our oceans could almost triple by 2040.
Based on the current trajectory, factoring in production volumes and the vast quantities of waste material which have ended up in waterways to date, the research suggests there could be more plastics than fish in our oceans by 2050, unless drastic and transformative action is taken around the world.
As we look for ways to recover from the economic shock of coronavirus, the circular economy presents opportunities to build a more resilient and regenerative economy that is better than the one we had,” the Foundatio notes. “Governments and businesses have shown sustained commitment to building a circular economy for plastic in recent years. This momentum can now be harnessed to transform the plastic system.”
