DAVOS - Brands should be held legally liable for workers’ rights violations in global garment supply chains, according to a joint statement from the Asia Floor Wage Alliance (AFWA) and Focus on Global South initiatives to the World Economic Forum.
They argue that global supply chains have been shaped and leveraged by transnational corporations which seek to maximise profits while forcing downward pressure on wages and raw material costs.
Developing economies have meanwhile pursued export-oriented industrialisation models that are mostly dictated by the requirements of these companies which take advantage of the lack of global regulation of supply chains.
