VANCOUVER – Canadian athleticwear brand Lululemon has launched its first line of shirts made with plant-based nylon as part of its partnership with biotechnology company Geno.
The deal with San Diego-based Geno, which ferments plant sugars into the chemical building blocks of nylon, was announced in 2021 and is part of Lululemon’s goal of selling 100% sustainable products by 2030.
The bio-based material has the same molecular structure as nylon – so is not biodegradable – but it reduces Lululemon’s reliance on fossil fuels by replacing the conventional nylon used in the company’s sportswear.
