Chinese e-commerce counterfeits pose safety threat

Washington think tank warns that the global apparel industry’s focus on sustainability is being undermined by online platforms that prioritise profit over regulatory compliance

WASHINGTON – The fashion and textile industry is facing a growing threat from Chinese e-commerce platforms operating with little regard for intellectual property (IP) rights or consumer safety, says a new report.

An investigation by the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF) – a US think tank – has found that Chinese e-commerce giants Temu, AliExpress, and Shein are not just a source of cheap clothing but a pipeline for counterfeits that may pose serious health risks.
