GAZIPUR - At least 20 garment workers have been injured in Bangladesh after police opened fire and baton-charged protesters who were demanding an extension of the Eid holidays.

The incident happened in the Tongi industrial area of the central city of Gazipur which, together with the capital Dhaka, has seen a series of Eid-related demonstrations.

Garment workers are demanding that the three-day public holidays be extended by up to seven days so that they can celebrate the religious festival with their families.
