Researchers assess PFAS alternatives for textiles

Researchers map five paths to high-performance waterproof breathable membranes but warn that no single alternative yet matches PFAS

SINGAPORE — A new scientific review has identified five key manufacturing routes that could allow the outdoor and workwear sectors to move away from waterproof breathable membranes based on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

Published as an article in press in the journal npj Advanced Manufacturing, the study, titled ‘PFAS-free waterproof breathable membrane technologies’, compares five fabrication methods: phase inversion, film stretching, melt extrusion, sacrificial templating and electrospinning.
