LONDON – The UK, European Union, US and Canada have jointly announced sanctions on Chinese officials over human rights abuses in the Xinjiang region which supplies more than a fifth of the world’s cotton.
Up to two million Uyghur Muslims have been detained in the region where many are reportedly used as forced labour in the cotton industry and other manufacturing sectors.
British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab told the House of Commons that the evidence about what is happening in Xinjiang was as “clear as it is sobering”, describing it as the “largest mass detention of an ethnic or religious group since the Second World War”.
