TORONTO – Health Canada has recalled a coat for toddlers sold by fast fashion brand Shein which was found to contain almost 20 times more lead than deemed safe for children.

In October, CBC Marketplace commissioned the University of Toronto to evaluate 38 samples of adult’s and children’s clothing and accessories to understand the levels of chemicals – including lead, PFAS and phthalates – in their make-up.

The Shein coat – of which 11 units were sold between October 2020 and September 2021 – posed the biggest risk, with environmental chemist and professor at the University of Toronto, Miriam Diamond, labelling it “evil”.
