THE HAGUE – Consumer watchdogs in the Netherlands have revealed the extent of the measures that fashion giant H&M and sporting gear retailer Decathlon agreed to accept to avoid sanctions for greenwashing.

H&M has agreed to withdraw its ‘Conscious’ and ‘Conscious Choice’ labels, accepting they are misleading, while Decathlon will do the same with its ‘Ecodesign’ label for products following investigations by the Netherlands’ Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM).

The companies also agreed to make substantial contributions – €500,000 (US$500,000) for H&M and €400,000 (US$400,000) for Decathlon – in exchange for the ACM agreeing to halt its investigations.
