Pakistan dyers turn to wood power

KARACHI – There is growing concern that in response to the on-going gas shortages across some provinces in Pakistan, many textile manufacturers have resorted to burning wood as an alternative energy source to power dyeing and finishing units. The move comes despite many textile mills possessing gas-fired technology but with no access to fuel. It’s feared the move will cause further, long term environmental issues in the region – and is another potential headache for clothing retailers and brands with strict CSR policies. Our Karachi correspondent reports.
