LEICESTER – A Labour MP has expressed concerns for garment workers in Leicester amid suggestions that the British government is set to cut red tape for businesses with fewer than 500 employees.

Speaking at a recent event, Chief Secretary to the Treasury Chris Philp indicated that Prime Minister Liz Truss’ government would explore “reducing business regulation” amongst smaller businesses, with Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, Jacob Rees-Mogg, said to have a “whole load of ideas to do so”.

Claudia Webbe, the MP for Leicester East, believes it could compromise the rights of workers in the city’s garment sector, the reputation of which was tarnished due to findings that some staff were paid less than half of the UK’s minimum wage.
