YANGON – British retailer Marks and Spencer has confirmed that it is to make a “responsible exit” from sourcing in Myanmar because of human rights abuses following last year’s military coup.

It follows an independent study, commissioned by the Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI) and said to be the most comprehensive carried out since the coup, which urged brands and retailers to reassess their presence in the country.

Marks and Spencer said the findings of the ‘Myanmar Enhanced Due Diligence Sectoral Assessment’ showed that it was impossible for its global sourcing principles to be upheld in Myanmar.
