EU tightens water quality rules – textile discharges in the frame

New EU rules tightening controls on chemical pollutants in European waterways entered into force today (11th May 2026), with implications for the textile and apparel industry.

The updated legislation amends the EU’s Water Framework Directive, Groundwater Directive and Environmental Quality Standards Directive, expanding the list of substances that must be monitored and controlled in both surface water and groundwater across member states.
